Midsummer marks the summer solstice,
the time when the sun is highest in the sky.
The meaning of Midsummer has its origins in both
folk beliefs and Christianity, but it is clear that
there is something magical about this festival of
love and that continues to fascinate. A tradition that
still survives in some places today is the love divination
of placing seven kinds of flowers under the pillow.
These are picked in the evening in silence so as not to
break the magic, and during Midsummer night it is said that
one dreams of the person one is going to marry.
The leafy Midsummer pole, the Maypole, is said to have symbolized
good sowing and vegetation in the farming community
